If technology doesn't seem like magic, it's probably obsolete

I'm finding less time to update my blog these days, but my flickr photostream is often updated.

Playing in my house right now...

When Boots introduced Kodak
self-print machines to their stores, I suggested they were missing a
trick by not allowing people to create postcards to send home with the
recent snap as the image on the front. I went as far as contacting Boots.

Today when I was in Boots, printing off some photos to brighten up my
desk (deskart? quickphotos? there must be a catchy title for that), I
spotted these. Not quite what I had in mind, but pretty cool all the
same. You print your photo, and then stick it inside the plastic pouch,
seal it, write on it and send it. My test postcard worked perfectly.

Now it\'s time to get in touch with Boots and see what my cut is for
identifying a space in the market. ;-)

Sounds good. I've used the Boots instant photo machines before, from memory cards, and the results are great. They are, though, becoming a victim of their own success, as every time I go to use them, there's either a long queue, or someone who's printing a huge amount of prints :-(

The idea for postcards is great, and certainly easier than the networks version using MMS.

Two problems I see with the MMS version (though I have to admit this is theory only, I haven't used this service), first - I've never actually managed to get MMS working on any phone I've used, and second - MMS reduces the size of the photo, so what started as a decent photo, will end up looking pretty pants after being sent as MMS.

By simply going into the nearest Boots and printing a postcard, both problems are solved. Now all I need is a holiday to send photos from !!

Just my 2p worth.

Agreed on the popularity, Pete. Most times I've used the Boots machine recently, I've had to wait, and there has been someone waiting behind me, too.

I'm assuming you're referring to the concept of sending the network an MMS with a postal address, which is then turned into a real world postcard and sent on, right? At the right price, I think it could be quite a nice service, although personally I prefer to see the final product and retain artistic control!

Only some of the MMS gateways reduce the size of MMS, I think. I'm fairly sure that Orange UK will let the full size file go through now. Vodafone did have some silly restriction, but that may have been lifted now too.

Have you really never managed to use MMS? Apart from the ludicrous price, I do think it's quite a useful and fun service. You should get it sorted! :-)

No, I've never manged to get MMS to work. Normally use SIM free, so it's not already setup, and when I've tried it's gone pear shaped!!

As I don't really know anyone who's got a phone to receive them, I always stick to email instead - and that's worked a treat from my phone. I think it might be cheaper too, though I'm not sure. Spose I should get MMS working...... maybe one day ;-)

You're quite possibly right that email is cheaper.

Even if the service doesn't come set up, you should be able to use the auto-configurators to get things set up easily. Give me a shout of you need the links. Always good to have the service ready, just in case!
