I was in the middle of writing about the Scottish Parliament debating whether to impose a ban on smoking in public places, and if so, what form that ban should take, when along came the news that a ban is going to be put in place!
I'm in favour of a ban in restaurants (nothing worse than the people beside you sparking up as you sit down to start eating), but I think there should be bars where smoking is allowed; I believe New York has 'cigar bars' which would be a way to go. Anyway, it's got to be a step in the right direction, and finally shows the Scottish Executive having some balls to make a proper decision.

good call. the scottish parliment has been all talk and no pants on too many issues for far too long now. good to see that scotland is back where it deserves to be - leading the UK.
My understanding is that it is enclosed areas only - thus I hope the Scottish Executive are going to find some funds to provide to the Local Council's so that they provide more rubbish bins/ash tray bins available otherwise we are going to have one helluva a mess on our streets with cigarette butts everywhere. I guess if they don't - it will give all you non smokers something else to complain about ;-)
I guess part of the aim of this measure is to stop people smoking, although I read that isn't necessarily going to happen. Perhaps smokers that drop their fag ends in the street should just be a little more thoughtful. Whilst I know they're paying more tax, that's to help support the health service which is getting clogged due to people having worse health, in part due to smoking, not to keep street cleaners in work. ;-)
So you are now equating widely accepted reasoned fact (smoking is bad for your, and other people's, health) to 'complaining'? Dear, dear ... all that tobacco has clearly dulled your thinking capability. ;-) ;-)

It's also important to note that the issue falls into employement law. If second hand smoke is truly leathal, then why should someone have to submit to it at their office. I would think that all of my friends working as actors ( i.e. bartenders and waitress/waiter type people ) should be able to make a living without destroying their voices from the environment in which they work.
