- the BBC has added a Weblog Watch to it's weekly magazine portion of the site, which is well worth a read. I particularly liked two sites it linked to: Postsecret, where people send hard-copy postcards with a secret one the picture side, and group hug, for anonymous online confessions
- Chemical Brothers remixed, and free to download (via Isaack)
- insanely cheap Web hosting, here for my reference
- insanely cheap fibre/fiber connections in Silicon Valley. If you lived there, why wouldn't you get this. Immedately.
- dwlt is making over his site, including a nice mobile version ... which is handy, as I'll be able to
nickleverage Dave's work for my own site (finally) - on a related note, I caught up with dwlt for a beer tonight. We headed to my local (OK, the most local pub to my flat, quite literally within spitting distance ... if there's a following wind, and you have a strong throat), the Canny Man's. It's quite an experience going there for a drink, and I've seen plenty of people be asked to leave, simply because the owner didn't like their face. However, over the last few months I've become something of a fan. Read the reviews for a taster of the atmosphere, and definitely put it on your list of places to visit if you're hitting Edinburgh: reviews 1, reviews 2.
On Friday night I rocked down with some quality Thai homecooking. I made Thai noodle soup followed by Thai green red curry. Both were word.
Two people, one friend and one cousin of a friend of a friend are doing quality challenges for charity:
- my colleague Debbie, in California, is doing a massive walk into the Grand Canyon for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. See her hike information and sponsorship details here.
- the cousin of a FOAF, is doing a MENTAL cycle, from Perth in Scotland to Perth in Australia. It's going to take her one year to complete, and she's cycling in aid of the British Heart Foundation and WorldVision. Her site with route information, photos and a report is here. She started yesterday, the 19th.
Free Internet voice calls (VOIP). Get it NOW! I'm 'ceemrl' is you want to say hello.
Unlikely as it is, I've got more to say about TV! Both item reference this original post:
E4 has announced it will be on Freeview from May 27th, so I contacted TopUpTV (you pay for a few more channels on digital TV) to see what they would be doing to counter the exodus of customers who realise they no longer need TopUpTV, given that E4 is about the only useful channel. They said:
Yes at some point in the future E4 is going to free-to-air and all TopUp TV customers will continue to receive it. Top Up TV are reviewing a number of replacement channel options for the near future. Please could we ask what channel you would prefer to be added to the package.Naturally I said Discovery Real Life; they thanked me ... and I'm very confident my mail was filed in the round cabinet on the floor. I'll be voting with my feet, and leaving them to it. Their operation could seriously have gone places, but it has been left to flounder with no renewed direction following the 4 move. The upside is that maybe, jusy maybe, I will never hear Richard Briars voice on TV again.
Yes, I love Scrubs, so hello new microsite.
Finally, someone has taken banks to task over the practice of taking up to a working week to transfer money between accounts, even if accounts are held with the same bank. The Sunday Times reports that banks will voluntarily speed up the transfer process, and if they don't do it voluntarily, legislation will be passed to make them do so.
It has been a ludicrous practice for years, with banks making millions from lending the money in the period between debit from the outgoing account and credit at the incoming account. Well done to the Office of Fair Trading.
In a separate financial issue, I currently have no money. Whilst trying to transfer some money into my current account, I messed up the special code and ... my account is locked. I've got to wait for a hard-copy LETTER to arrive before I can do *anything*. Time to change banks, I think.
- New BBC weather. It certainly seems to be working -- it's a super-sunny day here!

An entire week without posting. Woooops! Anyway, a quick reminder that the Scottish Blogs Meet is today at 2pm, in the Jolly Judge.
Blame the man in the sandwich shop for this, and feel free to add your own clean jokes in the comments:
A snail and a rabbit wanted to have a car race, so they went to the local ractrack with their friends. Unfortunately there were only two cars available, and they were identical. So that their supporters knew who was who, they decided to put an 'S' on the back for snail and and 'R' for the rabbit.
After several laps of zooming round the track, the snail was clearly much faster than the rabbit. Seeing this, a Frenchman said "look at that S car go"!
Tomorrow is the big election day in the UK, when we'll watch Labour surf back to victory, the Conservatives claim a good result and the Lib Dems claim an even better result, whilst some of the minority parties prove there really are a lot of people with challenging ideas living here. Ah, democracy!
It is important to vote, though. If you're still not sure where to put your cross, this site, as recommended by Ali and (computer) John, may help. 'If you don't do politics, there's not much you do do'.
OK, the move seems to have worked OK, fingers crossed. Please let me know if you see anything missing or find any problems.
My 1GB of online storage has run out, which means it's time to trade up. I'm staying with my existing hosting company for the moment. Sure, it's not the cheapest deal I could get, but they do a pretty good job of running my site (touch wood). The box I'm moving to is a semi-dedicated box, which means there will be just nine other accounts on there with mine. Nice.
With any luck you won't notice any issues as everything is moved and the DNS changed, but if you do, this is the reason. See you on the other side...
