If technology doesn't seem like magic, it's probably obsolete

I'm finding less time to update my blog these days, but my flickr photostream is often updated.

Playing in my house right now...

The council are at it again. They want to increase the controlled parking zone, taking in a massive swathe of Edinburgh. I live about two miles from the city centre, and the council are offering to put set car park spaces in my street, and then charge residents with cars eighty pounds per year purely for administration of the scheme (yeah, right).

There is an ongoing effort to get people to protest, and a Web site with pre-prepared letters is here. If you live in this area, PLEASE fill out a letter, to be returned by the 1st of December.

I'm hoping that the localfeeds aggregation of blogs will come into play here, and others in my area will see this.

What's this got to do with you you can't even drive? I'm all for anything that will stop the non native non coucil tax payers leaving their cars south of the meadows every day and making life difficult for anyone who lives there.

That is true, however my parents come to visit and they have a car. Friends come to visit and sometimes they come by car.

Based on how they have managed the system thus far, it is not going to benefit any resident -- it will just line council coffers.

yeah, but residents can send off for visitors half day passes for about the cost of the stamps. I'm with Simon on this. The proposal rocks, it is a pity it does not also apply in the evenings. You know fire engines might actually be able to get up my street! Plus it pisses off angry young men with cars. There is a meeting tonight at 7pm james gillespies primary, Martin you should go along and listen to how arsey the protesters sound.

Evans -- so, if my dad comes over for a few days, I have to pre-organise several parking permits for him, at the cost of 1.80 per half day, with a limit of 50 per year. You must be using very expensive stamps. And then, there is absolutely no guarantee that he will actually get a parking space...

Categorising parking isn't going to get rid of the problem of idiot parking in your street -- it is going to worsen it.

Have to say, I'm in favour of the controlled parking zones.

I'm in favour too. The new proposals affect me in Broughton Road, where we suffer out-of-towners dumping their cars for the day and there is little room for residents. They also affect my mother and several friends in Marchmont, who are also keen for this to happen, particularly with the large numbers of commuters racing up and down the streets near the primary and secondary schools looking for spaces at going-to-school time in the morning. Idiot parking is challenged by this, as anyone without a permit risks having their car impounded instantly and at great cost and inconvenience. Congestion in these areas is challenged by this, since people won't come to park, and more broadly by helping keep commuter cars out of the town. I do think the £80/year is too high though, the revenue from it will be way beyond the cost of implementing and policing the scheme.
