Today the Millau Bridge was opened in the Massif Central in France. It looks absolutely incredible. Engineering sometimes just looks SO breathtaking.
Comments
There was a comment about this on Yahoo!News claiming that this was nothing special because "the Americans had [built the highest bridge in the world] years ago" or words to that effect...
YahooNews or the person commenting are missing the point then really wouldn't you say?
What a great bridge, it looks amazing. And the Brits and French working together...
I hope someone talks to these guys when the time comes to build the new bridge over the Firth of Forth.

The Millau viaduct was built by the same company that built the Eiffel Tower. It is taller than the Eiffel Tower. Hydraulics are Spanish and American, the body and bulk are French. I've been to Millau. Dirving before this thing was built was nightmarish. If it can be classed as a birdge, then this is by far the world's biggest.
I forgot it was architected by Sir Norman Foster. The boy's a genius. Standing on the viewing balcony of the Tate Modern, there is an engraving of the London skyline, with callouts (keys) for each of the main visible structures, to help tourists identify them. It seems from the callouts that Sir Christopher Wren and Sir Norman Foster between them designed the whole of London! I was in Nimes watching Radiohead play in the 2000yr old Roman amphitheatre summer 2003. In that town, there is a Roman forum, again about 2000yrs old. Directly opposite is a library and public music centre designed by Sir Norman. It complements the forum perfectly.
He is so prolific. Do you think that a structuire bearing Foster's name was 100% designed by him? Surely he must have his "people" do most of the work for him, and outsource the finer details. (In the same way as Dolce or Armani don't ever design their own fragrances or watches).
