If technology doesn't seem like magic, it's probably obsolete

I'm finding less time to update my blog these days, but my flickr photostream is often updated.

Playing in my house right now...

The R.E.M. gig at Balloch is going to rock, but it's not the easiest place to get to as there's very limited public transport -- not ideal for 40,000 fans.

After pondering group transport, I did some searching today and got some good travel and transport information for getting to and from the concert. There's also a schedule: gates open at 3pm, first band on at 3.30pm, R.E.M. on at 8.30pm.

The driving option doesn't look hugely palatable, seeing as that means no beers + most likely sitting in traffic queues for hours, on both legs of the journey. If there are still spaces on the bus, I may have to persuade my comrades to take that method ... unless any lovely person is taking a minibus and happens to have a few spare seats...

As always, I like to give something back to the Web, so I updated the thread I found on the murmurs.com fan site.

If you do end up driving, top tip - when you hit Dumbarton, and the Barloan roundabout, turn RIGHT! - then go straight for as far as you can (various roundabouts and lights - will avoid the rest of the A82 which will turn into a car park.

And keep an eye out for me, I'll be there! (my mates house is all of 2 mins from the park)

REM were superb. Despite being a fan for more years than I care to remember, this was the first time I'd seen them live.
Michael Stipe hit the right notes from the start and had the crowd in the palm of his hand. What a great advert for live music.
The support bands (apart from Aberfeldy because I missed them) were very good also. I was particularly impressed with Ambulance Ltd who I'd never even heard of and the Zutons created an element of fun in music that I've not heard since the days of Devo. Feeder were as good as ever but did a disappointingly short set.

Balloch Castle has to be one of the worst venues ever. It was impossible to see anything for the trees. Never again.

Paul, Feeder decided to do a shortened set as they`re only the support band and didn`t want to upstage REM. They cut the set to 45 minutes, hit `em hard hit `em fast and leave them wanting more to give REM a better start. The Manchester gig was marred by a bloody awful audience until Losing My Religion was played so the set was changed by REM to get off to a flying start.
Feeder did a great job all round and REM were at their best.

Gary, just a thought for next time. Don`t stand behind trees.........

Damn those parks and their trees!!!

Seriously Gary, what did you expect, d'ye want them cut down for one concert???

Martyn & Gordon: I have to agree with Gary one this one to some degree. When I bought my tickets, I had absolutely no idea what the venue was like. I wasn't that impressed by the number and size of trees in the way, so moved forward to get them out of my field of vision.

Seeing as there were tens of thousands of people there and everyone couldn't move forward, there would inevitably have been people with a very limited view of the stage, who paid good money to see their favourite band(s). They don't do trees at many other big outdoor concerts...

Anyway, it's just a lesson to learn for next time. That, and be there earlier (for me).
